How Efficient Is the Microlino? A Closer Look at Its Technology, Battery and Recuperation System

07. oct. 2025

Anyone interested in the Microlino wants to know more than just its range or design. Many ask us: How long does the battery really last? How does recuperation work? And what kind of technology lies beneath that iconic aluminum body?

In this article, we’re opening the hood – figuratively speaking – to show what powers the Microlino, how it works, and why it’s perfectly engineered for modern urban life.

Battery – Energy in the Most Compact Form

Our goal was clear from the start: maximum efficiency in minimum space.
That’s why we offer the Microlino with three battery sizes – 5.5 kWh, 10.5 kWh, and 15 kWh – delivering a range of up to 228 km (WLTP), depending on the version.

We use lithium-ion cells with NMC or NCA chemistry – the same advanced technology used in many premium electric vehicles.
This combination of nickel, manganese, cobalt (or aluminium) ensures an excellent balance of energy density, safety, and durability.

The cells are arranged into modules and monitored by a Battery Management System (BMS). It continuously tracks voltage, temperature, and charge level of each cell – guaranteeing maximum safety and a long lifespan.

We provide a 6-year warranty on our drive battery. With proper care and moderate use, its real-world lifespan can be significantly longer.

At the end of its life cycle, each battery is either recycled responsibly or given a second life – for example, as a stationary energy storage unit.
In this way, its purpose extends beyond the vehicle, contributing to a circular and more sustainable energy economy.

Motor & Drive – Compact, Powerful, Full of Character

The Microlino is rear-wheel drive – and that’s no coincidence.
Mounted in the rear is a highly efficient electric motor with 12.5 kW continuous power (17 hp) and 89 Nm of torque. For short bursts, it can deliver up to 19 kW peak power – ideal for dynamic acceleration in city traffic.

Like most modern EVs, the Microlino doesn’t need a multi-speed gearbox.
Instead, we use a fixed reduction gear, which means fewer moving parts, less friction, and therefore greater efficiency.

Under optimal conditions, the efficiency of our drivetrain – from battery through inverter to the wheels – exceeds 90%, a figure that traditional cars simply can’t achieve.

Recuperation – Energy That’s Never Lost

In the Microlino, braking doesn’t mean wasting energy.
Each time you lift off the accelerator or slow down, the motor acts as a generator, converting motion into electricity and feeding it back into the battery.

This process, called recuperation, really shines in urban traffic with frequent stop-and-go situations, where a significant portion of energy can be recovered.

Of course, mechanical disc brakes are also in place for stronger braking or when the battery is fully charged.
Thanks to regenerative braking, these components are used less often – reducing wear and extending their service life.

Where Efficiency Meets Emotion – That’s Microlino

Beneath the charming retro design lies cutting-edge engineering:
a high-efficiency electric motor, a robust battery architecture, and an intelligent energy management system – all optimised for daily city driving.

Our goal was never to build the most powerful electric car.
Our goal was to build the most efficient and emotional one for the city.

Small, light, clean – and packed with technology that does far more than meets the eye.
