A road trip from Turin to Zurich – at first glance, it doesn't sound particularly spectacular. But what if the journey isn’t taken in a conventional car, but in a Microlino?
That’s exactly what the team from Automobil Revue set out to do. Their mission: to explore the limits of the Microlino and see how far they could push its boundaries. The result? An unforgettable adventure that not only tested the courage of the travelers but also captured the hearts of countless people.
The journey begins at the Microlino factory in La Loggia, just outside Turin. Here, the test drivers meet the Ouboter family, who not only provide a fascinating insight into the production of the small electric vehicle but also equip them with a brand-new long-range model. With an official range of 228 kilometers, in theory, it should only take two full charges to reach Zurich – but reality often follows its own rules.
As soon as the journey begins, one thing quickly becomes clear: the Microlino attracts attention like a magnet. In the narrow streets of Turin, heads turn, smartphones are whipped out, pedestrians wave, spontaneously hop into the driver’s seat, or press their noses against the windows. Meanwhile, charging proves to be a challenge—broken charging stations, blocked spots, and inefficient charging points force some creative breaks. But this is exactly what makes this road trip so unique – it’s not about speed but about the journey itself.
Through Country Roads, Mountain Passes, and Highways
Since the Microlino is not approved for highways in Italy, the journey continues along picturesque country roads, through charming villages, and over countless speed bumps. The driving experience? Surprisingly comfortable. Sure, the Microlino isn’t built for long-haul trips, but with the sunroof open, the gentle hum of the electric motor, and the direct driving feel, it delivers a true road trip experience. Once in Switzerland, the adventurers finally dare to take the highway – much to the amusement of other drivers, who curiously stare at the tiny vehicle. Even the passengers of a Ferrari 296 GTB can’t resist taking photos.
Things get really exciting on the way up the Gotthard Pass. The steep inclines put the battery to the test, but the Microlino manages the challenge – thanks to the boost button and full throttle. At 2,106 meters above sea level, the team is greeted by breathtaking views and numerous curious tourists who incredulously ask, “Did you really drive all the way here from Turin?” Once again, the Microlino proves to be a conversation starter and a true ambassador of charm.
An Electric Adventure with a Lasting Impression
After over 500 kilometers and countless charging stops and experiences along the way, the test drivers finally reach Zurich—exhausted but happy. The Microlino has proven that it is more than just a practical city car; it can also be a real adventure vehicle. In the end, the tiny electric car consumed just 8.1 kWh per 100 kilometers, costing less than 30 Swiss francs in electricity. But the real value of this journey? Priceless.
The Microlino is more than just a mode of transport—it’s an experience. It sparks conversations, brings people together, and turns heads everywhere it goes. Driving it means embracing a new kind of mobility. Sure, it’s not designed for highways, and yes, long distances require some planning. But that’s exactly what makes it so charming. As Automobil Revue aptly put it: the Microlino is a catalyst for experiences. And that is what makes it truly special!
